Terry L. Broxson’s Civil Rights Historical Novel “The Governor’s Trophy” Receives the Literary Titan Book Award

Terry L. Broxson’s historical novel, The Governor’s Trophy, has received the Literary Titan Book Award, recognizing the book’s compelling storytelling, historical depth, and thoughtful examination of courage, equality, and the power of words.

Set in 1956 Texas, The Governor’s Trophy follows four gifted college students whose participation in the Texas Collegiate Debate Championship places them at the center of a defining struggle over segregation and civil rights. Forty teams are scheduled to compete for the prestigious Governor’s Trophy, but the tournament becomes historic when Barbara Jordan and Otis King of Texas Southern University are invited to become the first African American debate team to compete against white Texas colleges.

Among their competitors are Maridell Fisher and Wretha Whittle of Hardin-Simmons University, the highest-ranked women’s debate team in Texas. All four students are only twenty years old, yet they must confront political interference, institutional prejudice, and the moral consequences of remaining silent.

Texas Governor Allan Shivers, angered by the United States Supreme Court’s ruling in Brown v. Board of Education, is determined to prevent Texas Southern University from participating. As political pressure mounts, the debate tournament becomes more than a contest of logic, evidence, and public speaking. It becomes a test of whether courage and conviction can overcome a system designed to exclude.

Literary Titan praised the novel for transforming debate into the driving force of the story, noting that each conversation becomes “a test of values, not just skill.” The review commended Broxson for presenting the students as intelligent, ambitious, humorous, and fully human characters rather than historical symbols. It also highlighted the novel’s grounded period details, from tournament rules and campus life to road trips and conversations over meals.

“The historical details, from debate rules to campus life to road trips and cafeteria meals, give the book a grounded texture,” Literary Titan wrote. The review described the novel as “thoughtful, accessible, and sincere, with a clear belief that words matter, but only when people are brave enough to stand behind them.”

Readers can discover the award-winning historical novel The Governor’s Trophy by Terry L. Broxson on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

The inspiration for The Governor’s Trophy began when Broxson learned that Barbara Jordan, who would later become one of the most influential political leaders in American history, had been a national champion debater. Debate had also played an important role in Broxson’s own life since his high school and college years.

Broxson combined historical events with an imagined encounter among four young debaters whose lives would later follow remarkable paths. Rather than portraying Barbara Jordan only as the towering national figure she became, Broxson presents her as a talented twenty-year-old discovering the reach of her voice. Maridell, Wretha, and Otis are given equal space to develop as competitors and as young people confronting the responsibilities placed before them.

Through their experiences, The Governor’s Trophy asks readers to consider how individuals respond when established rules conflict with justice. It also explores the role of education, public speaking, and principled argument in challenging prejudice.

With its blend of historical fiction, debate-room drama, and civil rights themes, The Governor’s Trophy will appeal to readers interested in Texas history, education, public speaking, social justice, and the early development of leaders such as Barbara Jordan. The Literary Titan Book Award honors the novel’s sincere and engaging portrayal of young people finding the courage to stand behind their beliefs.
